Today we launch something special: our "Every Girl's A Superhero!" animation video, and we wanted to share a few words about our personal motivations for this, and the powerful message we hope to convey.

Let’s bury the toxic messages of beauty over substance. Every girl’s a superhero! #BeBold, #BeBrave, #BeYou WATCH: lott.ie/girl-superhero

BURY THE TOXIC MESSAGES OF BEAUTY OVER SUBSTANCE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Girls (..and boys) deserve a wider variety of toys. Let’s move beyond unrealistic beauty ideals, take a hammer to limiting stereotypes, and instead lead with confidence, and celebrate the uniqueness of EVERY girl:

EVERY GIRL IS A SUPERHERO!

The Lottie dolls stopmotion animation video, “Every Girl’s a Superhero!,” inspires girls to express their adventurous spirit and originality, which is so important at a time when there’s such pressure on young girls nowadays to look thin, adhere to unrealistic beauty ideals, forced to become adult before their time, with the constant pressure to actually live this airbrushed perfection.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INSPIRE GIRLS TO BE UNIQUE AND CELEBRATE THEIR UNIQUENESS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lucie Follett, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Arklu, explains:

““We wanted to create something really inspiring, upbeat, fun and positive, targeted towards children, but also demonstrate in a light-hearted manner how we’re working to ‘bury’ the toxic beauty standards that pervade society and have such negative implications for girls.
We want girls to see the full range of possibilities open to them, and girls being supportive of one another in their interests and activities, however diverse those choices might be.
Every girl is unique and that uniqueness should be celebrated.
We hope this video inspires girls to express their adventurous spirit and originality ”

The video opens with three hard-hitting messages that inspire girls to #Be Bold #Be Brave #Be You, before launching into a series of girls taking part in adventurous escapades under the watchful aegis of Super Lottie. Each scene depicts how girls don’t require super-powers to be a superhero, but how acts of kindness, bravery, overcoming challenges, breaking boundaries, and remaining true to oneself are all superhero qualities.

“Embrace life, without limitation #Be Bold”

“Challenge yourself, break boundaries #Be Brave”

“Be true to yourself, accept all you are and everything you can be #BeYou”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SMASH NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES AND CELEBRATE A CHILDHOOD WITHOUT LIMITATION
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Instead of reinforcing unattainable beauty standards; let’s bury the toxic messages of beauty over substance, and celebrate the uniqueness of every girl.

Lucie says:

“Lottie represents all the positive, different facets of childhood, without limitation.
As Melissa Wardy, author of 'Redefining Girly', says: There are many ways to be a girl!
It’s about balance; it's about allowing girls to see the full range of possibilities open to them, and girls being supportive of one another in their interests and activities, however diverse those choices might be.
Pink in itself is NOT the problem; rather, it's the limitations that have come to be associated with it, and recently the constant reinforcement that to like pink or embrace femininity is weak or inferior, which I think is equally damaging.
Let’s give children the choice!”

Girls can like different things, still be girls, and accept each other. We want girls to see the full range of possibilities open for them, able to make their own choices, not villainizing them for making the "wrong" choice: EVERY GIRL IS A SUPERHERO!

Lottie dolls do all the activities that real kids do; be they activities traditionally perceived as ‘girly’, like ballet or imaginary tea parties, getting muddy outdoors, being sporty and active, as well as robot building projects, star gazing and fossil hunting. Imaginative dress-up play too, whether as a queen or pirate or superhero.

The stopmotion video features forthcoming science-themed Lottie dolls: 'Stargazer' Lottie doll which is collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), and 'Fossil Hunter' Lottie doll which is collaboration with TrowelBlazers, an international team of scientists dedicated to highlighting the contributions of women to archaeology, geology, and palaeontology. Stargazer and Fossil Hunter Lottie dolls will launch in 2015.

-----------------------------------------------------------
CELEBRATE UNIQUENESS AND DIVERSITY
-----------------------------------------------------------

Girls (and boys...) deserve a wider variety of toys. Let’s move beyond unrealistic beauty ideals, take a hammer to limiting stereotypes, and instead embrace balance, lead with confidence and celebrate the uniqueness of EVERY girl: EVERY GIRL IS A SUPERHERO!

Lottie dolls are realistic, and just like the children who play with them (both boys and girls). They have a diverse range of skin, hair and eye colours. They are age-appropriate, and realistic, with a ‘child-like’ body based on the scientific dimensions of a nine year old girl.

  • I had contemplated ‘banning’ dolls for my little girl (almost 1)…I think you and #Lottie may have just changed my mind!!

  • Even Lottie dolls know that ammonites are the coolest fossils! Can’t wait for Fossil Hunter!

  • Already had friends w/ children tell me they like Lottie dolls, & are super keen on the idea of a palaeontology Fossil Hunter Lottie :-)

  • My son loves his Lottie dolls! We got him a Finn doll too, and now he has it dressed in the Lottie pirate outfit. Just awesome how the clothing is gender-neutral too. Hope you bring out more outfits soon.

  • I really like your message, it is so inclusive. I also read Melissa Wardy’s book (Redefining Girly) and I like the idea that ‘there are many ways to be a girl’. It’s a really healthy, inclusive approach. My daughter plays dress up, she loves her (Lottie) dolls and she’s into building things too. That is the way it should be!
